Mambo vipi?

First, an announcement. You may notice this newsletter is arriving from a new home.

Remember how, at the marathon in Dodoma, some people’s phones mysteriously stopped picking up their calls? Well, life humbled us, too. Our email provider also stopped responding to us.

No warning, no explanation, no closure. Suspended, just like that. We too know the pain of being left on read.

So we packed our bags and moved here to Substack. New house, same landlord. If you are reading this, you found us, and that already makes you smarter than half the internet. Hit subscribe so we never lose each other again, because clearly, we have trust issues now.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

So... yesterday was interesting.

While a certain famous marathon was happening in Dodoma, the one where phones were mysteriously on silent, “babe I’m with the girls” messages were flying, and some relationships reportedly did not survive the 21 kilometres, something very different was happening on our side.

Your babe was safe with us. 😌

No missed calls, no suspicious location updates. Just a room full of laptops, notebooks, and people quietly plotting how to earn in dollars. If your partner told you they were at the Remotika event yesterday, good news: for once, the alibi is real. We have the photos to prove it (click here to see them).

But jokes aside, yesterday taught me something I want to talk about.

Everyone is talking about “third spaces” these days. Not home, not the office, but that third place where you go to feel alive. For some people, it’s the bar. For others, it’s a marathon in Dodoma (we’ve seen how that goes).

Here’s my controversial take: if you’re a freelancer or remote worker, your third space should be intellectual. It should be a room that makes you money, not one that makes you broke.

Think about it. Remote work is lonely by design. You work from your bedroom, your clients are in another timezone, and the only colleague you talk to is ChatGPT. Nobody at your family gathering understands what you do. Half of them still think online work is a polite word for something illegal.

That is exactly why yesterday mattered, and why community events in our niche are not optional.

Here is what actually happened in that room:

People heard from experts who already earn on Upwork, Fiverr, Outlier, CrowdGen, Preply, Handshake AI, and Invisible AI. Not YouTube theory, but real accounts, real payments, real mistakes to avoid. Someone asked a question at minute two that saved them from a mistake that would take others six months to discover.

People exchanged numbers with others doing exactly what they do, and in this industry, one contact can change your entire year. And Doreen dropped legal tips that most freelancers only learn after a client has already refused to pay them.

You cannot download that from a webinar. The WiFi of opportunity is strongest in person.

So if you showed up yesterday with your laptop and your diary, on time (mostly 😅), thank you. To our speakers who gave their Saturday and their secrets for free, and to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make it happen, this event was yours as much as ours.

One quick thing before you go:

Tell us the truth. What did you love? What should we fix? Your feedback decides how we build the next one: https://forms.gle/61AAwwmp91MVmFsV6

And now... a small leak. 👀

Mark this somewhere: 31 October. We are planning something that will make yesterday look like a warm-up. Over 1,000 freelancers, one place, one day. We are calling it shutting down the city, and honestly, we are not exaggerating.

Stay subscribed right here. This community hears everything first. Before Instagram, before WhatsApp statuses, before your friend who “knows someone at Remotika.” And there might be a discount waiting for the people reading this. Might. 😏
